The Rainbows played their first season (and only?) in 1981 as a member of the Northern Division of the National Women's Football League. The NWFL consisted of three divisions: Northern (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York), Southern (Texas and Oklahoma), and Western (Arizona and California). The NWFL adopted Federation (High School) Rules with the following exceptions:
